Crowns Q & A
What are crowns?
Crowns are synthetic caps made of porcelain, ceramic, gold, or metal amalgam. They’re bonded to the top of a decaying or damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and overall appearance.
Crowns are tough and improve your chewing and biting abilities. If you brush and floss regularly and participate in routine dental checkups, they often last 12-15 years and sometimes even longer.
What types of issues can crowns correct?
At HP Dentistry PC, Dr. Pasnikowska and the team use crowns to:
- Protect weak teeth
- Restore fractured or chipped teeth
- Complete root canal therapy
- Hold a dental bridge in place
- Cover dental implants
You might also benefit from a crown if you have a severely stained or discolored tooth that won’t respond to teeth whitening.
What does getting crowns involve?
At HP Dentistry PC, getting dental crowns takes two separate appointments:
First appointment
Before recommending a crown, Dr. Pasnikowska conducts an oral exam and takes a series of digital X-rays. She uses X-rays to assess your tooth and to develop a treatment plan. Next, Dr. Pasnikowska administers a local anesthetic. She removes the damaged or decaying portion of your tooth and takes digital impressions with an intraoral scanner.
Dr. Pasnikowska sends your scans to a dental laboratory. The technicians at the lab use your scans to design and manufacture a custom dental crown that fits your tooth perfectly.
Second appointment
When the team at HP Dentistry PC receives your permanent crown, you return to the office. Dr. Pasnikowska administers a local anesthetic, lines up the crown with your tooth, and bonds it in place. Afterward, she polishes your teeth and provides care instructions.
Do crowns require regular maintenance?
Yes. If you want to keep your dental crown in optimal condition, it’s important to practice good oral hygiene. Dr. Pasnikowska recommends visiting HP Dentistry PC two times a year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning and brushing and flossing twice daily.
To prevent damage to your crowns, wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth or play contact sports. In addition, avoid bad habits like opening packaging with your teeth or biting down on hard objects.
